Regeneration of the former Vittorio Emanuele II Cavalry Barracks

The masterplan for the regeneration of the former Cavalry Barracks Vittorio Emanuele II, curated by Stefano Boeri Interiors, aims to revive and restore function to the complex, providing a concrete response to the needs of the community, in Voghera, Italy. The intervention seeks to transform the 45,060 sqm historic structure, built in the second half of the 19th century and now only partially in use, into a new accessible public hub shaped by principles of sustainability, inclusion, and innovation.

“In designing the new life of the former Barracks, we envisioned a multifunctional and open building, an urban organism reborn around green courtyards, ready to welcome all those social, educational, cultural, and entertainment trajectories capable of enlivening an entire territory and community. A challenge through which Voghera can also be seen as a new point of reference within the regional university landscape.” Stefano Boeri

The masterplan proposes the transformation of the former Barracks into a “city-building,” capable of bringing together public functions, services, education, culture, museums, social interaction, and well-being. Through a new distribution of spaces and targeted maintenance and renovation of the existing buildings (municipal offices, Ricottiana Library, Natural Science Museum, Historical Museum, Municipal Archive, Pascoli Secondary School), the complex will become an integrated hub focused on the quality of urban life. Alongside public functions, the project includes the strengthening of personal services, meeting spaces for families, senior living residences, student housing with an urban university campus, responding to the needs of an evolving population marked by ageing and increasing cultural diversity. The regeneration also involves the landscape design of the complex, which will create “Le Corti di Voghera”, a large system of interconnected courtyards and thematic gardens designed to host cultural, sports, and recreational activities.
